Math Checkups

Fifth Grade

“How many pixels are in that picture?”

On your cellphone, pick a favorite image, then explain it’s made of “pixels” – rows of colored dots. Try 1920 pixels tall and 1080 pixels across!

What's the skill?

This involves multiplying multi-digit numbers and understanding place value.

Why is it urgent?

It’s critical that your child see why we multiply each digit by all the digits in the other number. Otherwise, it’s just meaningless dance steps. Also, in real life, the person who can estimate will always be faster than the calculator-fumblers.

“How do we make 1 1/2 times as many cookies?”

Challenge your child to make 1 1/2 times any favorite recipe. How much do we need of each ingredient now?

What's the skill?

Adding and multiplying fractions are critical skills for 5th grade.

Why is it urgent?

Sayings like “multiply the bottoms” prevent kids from seeing the actual math in action. This exercise ensures your child is fraction-fluent.
